A Dead World Title Graphic

Entry 58

A serious storm moved in last night. I woke up sometime early this morning from the thunder. While I do love listening to the rain, this storm seemed to have brought the fall chill with it. The thunder passed quickly and a couple more blankets warmed me up, but I could not sleep. I have never in my life had to deal with winter without heaters. My apartment does not have a fireplace. How will I stay warm this winter?

My priority for the day was to finish going through the last of the second floor apartments. For the first part of the day, the thought of freezing during winter was on my mind. There is plenty of time to do something before winter, I just do not know what to do. I tried to distract myself with the apartments.

The fish tank was my first goal. I took out a few more gallons using some buckets in the apartment. It was enough that I could somewhat pick up the aquarium. There was no way I could carry it all the way back so instead I put it on a table in the front room. I figure it would give them enough light that they would hopefully live a bit longer. I am not sure how I will keep them alive without the ability to change the water.

The last two apartments on the second floor were interesting. The first apartment appeared to be a husband and wife. They both were in the military or at least had been from the pictures. There was a note on the refrigerator from the wife to the husband. The note said she had been called away early that morning and was sorry she missed him. The note was dated the day before the zombies destroyed everything. The odds that they are connected are so slim, but my mind seems so very quick to connect the two. Did they have forewarning?

The next apartment belonged to a cop. He appeared to be partners or friends with the ex-military guy next door. He too had some pictures of him in the military, but another picture showed him and the guy next door sitting on the hood of a patrol car for the local police. His apartment hinted that he left suddenly. He had cooked breakfast which was sitting on the table, but left without eating it. The coffee pot was full of coffee and the creamer was on the counter. The bedroom left me with more questions than answers. The top shelf of the closet had been swept to the floor and two dresser drawers had been removed and flipped upside down onto the bed. On the bottom of each were remnants of the duct tape.

My searches of both apartments did not turn up too much. Both apartments seemed as though people had rushed to take certain things and left. My first thought was guns, perhaps souvenirs from the military? But, who would tape a gun under a drawer? For supplies it looked like both apartments were stocked rather sparsely. Not much was in the fridges or freezers, but the cabinets had more food which kept. The real gem was in the second apartment's closet. He had a small box of 12 MRE rations. They are something to save in case things get dire.

As I was hauling back the supplies I kept rolling over what I found in the last two apartments. I very much wanted to go back through them with a fine tooth comb. Perhaps they had more information or supplies hidden somewhere. It confused me what the police officer would have removed from hiding before leaving though. Maybe the two partners had some cabin or safer place they tried to head to? I have no answers. For now I have to focus on going through the third floor apartments and finding a way to stay warm when it gets colder.
