Entry 53
Thanks to how quiet the zombies have been I was able to sleep some last night. Knowing they were all out there waiting for me kept me waking up from nightmares throughout the night. I have no idea what to do.
The whole day they have stayed in a big mob down there. They move around amongst themselves here and there for some unknown reason, but otherwise they seem intent on waiting it out. Maybe now that everyone that is easy to get to is gone they just lay siege until people give up? If they were smart enough to plan sieges they would probably be smart enough to get a ladder once they realized I was up here. I cannot understand their actions. Why can't they behave like zombies in movies where they are slow and easily distracted?
Rather than spend my day zombie watching, I used all my quiet time to sort through all the supplies and food I gathered. I am still not sure if it is wiser to keep all the materials together or in separate apartments. I opted towards the mostly together approach and kept a majority of it in my apartment. I also took duplicate tools from the utility room and made a small tool set to keep in my apartment just in case. I also used the time to sort through my food. I emptied out the freezer and fridge of all the spoiled food. I also organize the food I had by how long-lasting it would be. With the food sorted I ate a lunch of potato chips and pondered what to do with the rest of my day.
As I was watching the zombies and eating lunch it occurred to me I had not looked at most the supplies I brought back from the sports store. The rest of the afternoon was spent opening up and playing with everything I bought. I actually had a bit of fun. I set up the tent in the apartment next door to figure out how to use it and learn how to pack it. I also opened up some emergency/survival kits which I grabbed at the store. Some of them were silly, one kit had 2 matches, a piece of paper, two small hard candies, and a inch-wide round mirror. Two were actually substantial kits with a variety of food, thin plastic blankets, a handful of waterproof matches, magnesium with a flint, water purification tablets, and a variety of other useful bits. If I were lost in the woods the big kits would be worth their weight in gold. I repacked the big kits and added the small kits in with them. I ended up with 2 big kits and a medium kit. I moved one of the big kits to the utility room and kept the other two with me. If I could bring nothing else, one of those kits might be enough to survive long enough to find more supplies.
Once the light started to fade I finished sorting out the last few items and felt pretty good about how it was all organized. I also now have a very good idea of exactly what I have to work with. If things go horribly wrong and I have to abandon the apartment I now have a good idea of what I would fill my bags with before I ran. Even with the zombies outside I feel like I am in a pretty good spot for the moment. Now to try and pretend they are not there so I can sleep.
