Entry 8

I spent most of yesterday just sitting and thinking. I even had the last few cookies in the house to cheer myself up. I realized I could not let myself give up. There has to be other people out there, maybe lots of people out there and I just don't know. Maybe the guy the other day was running to a nearby shelter. I just wish I had a radio, they always say to listen to the radio in a disaster.

I checked the cable again, the TV is still blank and the internet is still down. I just wish I had thought to grab my cell phone out of the car or had paid the extra money to have a land-line, maybe those still worked. My neighbor just might have a phone or radio, making getting into his apartment all the more important.

I was going over my plans to enter the apartment when I realized I had no idea how to use the weapon I made. I needed to spend some time learning how to use my saw-spear. I first swung the weapon, bringing the teeth down on my target. After a few hits on the loveseat I quickly realized it was not sturdy enough to be used like an axe. When I tried using it more like a spear I found the tip was very sharp and could go clean through the loveseat without much force. Most importantly, I realized it could probably take down one of them. After awhile I started to get a feel for it and I could thrust clean through the cloth and cushions, quickly pull it back, and be ready for the next attack.

I spent a couple of hours practicing and decided to stop before I dulled the teeth too much. I had caught the springs a few times and a couple teeth showed some wear, but it was still very sharp. I went back over to where I wanted to cut through between his bathroom and my bedroom, ensuring there was nothing in the walls. I am pretty sure the walls are only drywall with wood studs from the hole I made when I first tried to hang the picture. One nice thing about having made my spear out of the saw is my weapon will already be in my hand when I make the hole.

By the time I had practiced and looked at the walls, it was already starting to get dark. I ended up eating a few things which were starting to look like they might spoil soon and threw out a few things which had. Between what had spoiled and eating more than planned, the food is not lasting as long as I had hoped. At best I only have about four days left. I really hope there is food in my neighbor's apartment. Even better, maybe I can find out something over the phone or radio.
