Entry 4
Tonight I have light! I moved from the front room to the bathroom and put a towel under the door to stop the light. It is probably less safe as I cannot hear into the apartment or outside as well as I could in the front room, but still somehow I feel safer with the warm glow of the light.
I was actually a bit hungry for the first time in awhile today. I have been drinking some water out of the tap here and there but never thought much about food till today. Luckily, with the power still on not much has spoiled in the fridge as of yet. The only problem is last week I was eating out to avoid grocery shopping so I do not have much food. I ended up with a cheese and lettuce sandwich since I had no lunch meat and the leftover chicken had already gone bad. The thought of food got my mind on what I needed to be doing to survive. I did not have any sort of disaster kit so I am rather poorly prepared. I also do not have any sort of weapon other than some kitchen knives and a hammer. I never had anything against weapons; but car repairs, food, and computer parts were more important at the time. I just wish I could go back in time to pick up food, a gun, and some more tools.
In an effort to see what all I had to work with, I dug through my drawers and closet making a pile in the bedroom of anything that might be useful. Sadly, it took less than half an hour and as I looked at the pitiful pile I did not feel any better. My mind wandered back to wanting something to defend myself with and I started to look for what would make the best weapon. Pretty quickly it seemed the options were a kitchen knife, wood handled broom, tennis racket, and a drywall saw. I really had no idea what would be most effective and none seemed reliable enough to trust my life to. I ended up keeping one of the larger kitchen knives as it was still better than nothing.Without much weapon success I looked at the tools I had. My neighbor had always been willing to lend me a tool if I needed one so my collection was rather sparse. My tools mostly came from a cheap kit with little more than a few necessities like screwdrivers, pliers, a small hammer, and wire cutters. I did have a picture hanging kit which I had used to hang a single picture. I also had some red electrical tape which I had picked up for a project I never did.
I was wishing I could still go over and ask my neighbor for a tool when I realized the tools were still likely there. In fact I had never even checked to see if my neighbors were gone! I went to the wall we shared and knocked a few times then listed for awhile. After listening for a response awhile I finally gave up. Of course now when I am thinking a bit more clearly he probably would have heard me the other day when I was yelling and both times I hammered nails into the door. Worse, were he one of them he might have torn right through the flimsy drywall that separated us after my knocking. My lack of sleep is affecting my judgment. Today it was a harmless oversight but next time it might mean my death. I need sleep.
