Entry 28
At least the zombies cannot get up one of the two stairways. There are still quite a few standing near the fallen stairs. So far I have yet to see any at all on the second story walkway. I am going to hope they are not smart enough to walk around to the other staircase. They do not seem to realize I am up here, so I suspect they were merely drawn to the loud sound of the staircase collapsing.
I had hoped to be able to try to get to the other stairway today, but with so many outside where the old one fell it was not worth the risk. They usually seem to wander off after awhile so I can just wait. I doubt the next set of stairs will be so easy to unbolt. I was lucky the bolts on the first staircase were loose. The next set could all be rusted solid.
It is actually almost encouraging when I realized how many apartments are so easy to reach. My apartment is number 203; I first cut west into 204 and later 205, then through 202 and 201 to the utility room. That means I still have 10 more apartments on just this floor and 16 on the floor above. It has been over a month and it is impressive how long the food has lasted me. All the other apartments should keep me going for quite awhile, at least as long as the electricity works.
Since I was stuck indoors, I used my time to sort through the rooms I had not had time to carefully go through. Sadly, there was not much more than the food I had already taken out. The only jewels I found among them were a very nice office chair in 202 and some clothes that fit in 201. I sifted through his drawers and closet then took a handful of clothes I liked back to my apartment. I decided today was a great time to rinse off. With the apartments near me safe and one stairway down, I figured I could safely shower. Not having to get into a tub of cold water made it easier to tolerate.
Once I was clean I put on some of my new clothes and I washed all my dirty clothes and sheets. With those hung up I started to clean about the apartment. I had been taking care of food cleanup but everything else was covered in dirt and sawdust. I was not willing to start up the vacuum but I was able to use a broom from the utility closet to sweep up the worst of the messes. I even did a bit of tidying in the other apartments. I think I can safely assume my apartment through the utility room are well secured. I might turn the utility room into my tool and material storage. Spreading out and organizing the rooms seems to make me feel more prepared to take on future projects.
I was pretty sure I would move my materials and tools to the utility room so I went ahead and enlarged the three holes between rooms. I was able to move around the furniture in the utility room so I could make the hole go all the way to the floor. Not having to crawl into the room will make getting materials and supplies in and out much easier.
Tomorrow I will either try to take down the next stairway or go about turning the utility room into my workshop.
