Entry 25
How do you carry a gun without a holster? You cannot carry it in your pocket and I tried the waistband thing everyone does in movies and it fell into my pant leg. I will have to see about making a holster in the near future. I would like to be able to keep the gun on me while I am working on stuff with both my hands. For the moment I will just have to keep it nearby when I am working and make sure to grab it if something happens.
I started off before it was even bright enough to see. I cut a few boards so I could barricade my bathroom door in case something went wrong in the apartments I planned to cut into. Since the door opened away from me the only option was to simply put a hammer and nails with some boards next to the door so I could drive nails into the door. I am not sure how well zombies are at opening a door, but hopefully the boards nailed into the frame and the door would be enough to stop one or two from getting in.
Once it was light enough to see, I moved my tools and food into the neighboring apartment. The chance I might get overrun and lose all my food and tools made it worth moving everything. Once the materials were moved I checked where the hole was in my neighbor's bathroom. This way I was able to figure out exactly where to cut since this is the first time I have cut from a bathroom into a bedroom.
With everything else ready, I got my saw and gun and headed to the bathroom. I have started to get a routine for cutting into an apartment. First, I cut about half of the hole out and listen. Then once the hole is completely cut I examine the room while listening carefully. Next, I move into the room and look quickly, carefully, and quietly for any signs of them; taking care to check everywhere before I feel safe and checking for that horrible smell. Lastly, I check the other room and front area in a wide arc so I can ensure the kitchen is clear.
The first apartment I cut into was locked up and empty luckily. I quickly found some larger furniture to board up the window and made a brace for the door. I then did a quick search through the apartment for another gun or anything that caught my eye. Without any more guns I gathered up the food which was still good and put it into the apartment where I was storing everything for the moment.
I went straight on to cutting into the next apartment. Everything was going just like the last apartment until I left the bedroom. I looked towards the front room to find the front door open! I almost bolted back into the bedroom. Instead, I slowly crept to the front room. As I neared the front door I could see the room was empty. I crept to the front door and then quickly shut and locked it. After waiting a moment to make sure I did not hear any movement outside I finally took a deep breath and found some wood for the window and door. Like the first, there were food and supplies but nothing really worthy of note.
By the time I had the second apartment barricaded up it was starting to get late. I wanted to try to get into the utility room, but it seemed like the safer choice was to wait. Instead I moved all the tools and food back into my apartment and built the removable door braces for the two bedroom doors. This way I could barricade each apartment like I had done with the others. With everything secure I cleaned up a bit and got some dinner.
With my dinner I decided to treat myself to some cookies and milk I found in the first apartment. Well, it was actually soy milk. It was unopened and had not yet expired. I popped open the seal, smelled i,t and tasted a small bit and decided it was still good. As I sat at my desk enjoying the cookies I was able to pretend everything was back to normal.
